Spain’s National Police is attempting to prevent the Catalan local police, the Mossos D’Esquadra, from destroying documents that might be related to the independence referendum that took place in Catalonia on October 1st.
According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, this morning (October 26) the National Police intercepted a truck of the Mossos d’Esquadra that was heading towards an incinerator in Sant Adrià del Besós near Barcelona.
The truck transported documents that the Police believe to be related to the controversial independence referendum, which Spain’s supreme court had ruled illegal.
The Police has sought a court injunction to stop the incineration of the documents in order to examine them.
The Mossos d’Esquadra denied that the documents contained sensitive information and stated that the incineration of official documents is a customary practice, El Pais quoted sources of the Catalan police as saying.
